This year's Fourth of July hot dog eating contest ended up tied after the regulation 10 minutes, with Chestnut and Kobayashi both having consumed 59 dogs and buns. The contest then went to a 5 hot dog eat-off. Chestnut was able to consume all 5 dogs just moments ahead of Kobayashi, thereby defending his title and assuring the coveted Mustard Yellow Belt a home in the United States for one more year. We, the Goo Goo Dolls, are happy once again to congratulate Mr Chestnut on a fine performance.
However, Mr Takac and Mr Mainin, after a lengthy conversation, both agreed that a more fair way to pick a winner would have been one extra minute of eating time. Whoever ate more in that extra minute would then be declared champion. If there was still a tie, they should then go for one extra minute. Maybe the IFOCE (International Federation of Competitive Eating) will take our suggestion to heart. We certainly hope so.
